DescriptionThis instrument is essentially a direct-vision spectroscope, equipped with a wide dispersion prism of the Amici-Janssen type. On top of the main tube is a tangential screw that moves the ocular section horizontally. Its position is determined by a vernier scale. The collimator on the spectroscope's eyepiece (which is missing) receives two light samples: on the lower part of the collimator a light from straight ahead; on the upper part a light at right angle from the first. The polarizer on the right-angled tube is missing here. Only the analyzer appears to be in the short tube. The latter is made of two Nicol prisms. The instrument rests on a telescopic arm and tripod, and is given support by an oblique rod. The tripod is also equipped with a gas stopcock, which was probably connected to the gas-light holder attached under the side telescope.

The letter "H" (for Harvard) is painted on the black section of the tube.

For more information, see the following Pellin trade catalogue here (in French).
Signedon tube: F. Pellin / Paris
FunctionThis instrument was used for measuring the intensity of light and color in different parts of the spectrum by a controlled light source. When a specimen or liquid solution is put in the direct path of the controlled source, this instrument can then determine the amount of light absorption.
