DescriptionA mercury barometer in a rectangular wood frame and gun metal inner casing with an engraved sliding scale from 20 to 32 inches and a vernier attached to the frame. It has a copper-colored cylindrical canister without any means of adjusting the mercury level.

FunctionA portable instrument for measuring atmospheric pressure. When used, it would be placed vertically (preferrably on a tripod) with the canister at the bottom, and then the reading would be taken from the scale on the upper part of the barometer at the place of the mercury level with the help of the vernier.
ProvenanceDavid Wheatland purchased in 1959. Donated to CHSI April 4, 1986.
Historical AttributesThis thermometer apparently went on the Schlagintweit expedition to India between 1854 and 1858.
