Material
DescriptionA paper roll marked with lines 0-100, every 2 units is mounted on geared rollers driven electrically. Some gears in the box are red, green, gold, or silver-toned metal. An on/off switch is on the side of the roller frame. Below the paper, there is a diagram on the paper path.
Above the paper, there is a curved dial marked 0-100, every 2, and titled, "AMPERES D.C." There is a movable pointer with a red open triangle below it. The triangle terminates in another pointer that glides across the paper.
Above the dial, there is a socket for a light (the bulb is missing) and a push botton switch.
Below the paper, there is a zero adjustment dial and metal label. The label reads on the left: "MAX. CIRCUIT / VOLTAGE, 750 / FULL SCALE / MILLI -VOLTS / AT METER / 99.0 / AT END OF LEADS / 100. / MODEL AW." On the right, it reads: "ESTERLINE-ANGUS GRAPHIC AMMETER / FOR USE ON D.C. / THE ESTERLINE-ANGUS COMPANY / INDIANAPOLIS, IND. / U. S. A. / FULL SCALE / MILLI-AMPS / [blank strip] / AMPERES / .150 / SERIAL NO. 185635."
The instrument has a metal housing and a door with a locking handle. There is a glass window in the door. The instrument is finished with a black, cross-hatched pattern. An aluminum tag on the glass is stamped, "IR1C." A calibration paper sticker on the door frame says, "Checked / BY RAY W / [DATE] 2-9-64."
A yellow and silver metal tag on the door frame reads: "CONTRACT AT (30-1) 2789 / AEC 9307."
The front of the instrument has four holes for bolts (three are present) to mount it in a rack. On the back, there are screws marked "+" and "-" and "CHART DRIVE" and "120V / 60-." White lettering also reads, "IR1C." There is a piece of rectangular plexiglass screwed to the back. There are also a pair of electrical posts with black thumb screws, a General Electric FS5 starter for the flourescent bulb, and an induction coil.

FunctionThis ammeter with strip-chart recorder kept a record of cyclotron functions (in terms of electrical current) as a function of time.
Historical AttributesThis ammeter with strip chart recorder came from the Harvard Cyclotron Laboratory's Control Room. It was part of the original control console in 1948, but used until the mid-1960s. The tag marked "AEC" refers to the Atomic Energy Commission.
