DescriptionThis Geiger counter is shop built.
The metal box has a black crackle finish, except for the front plate, which is smooth black enamel. The white meter is calibrated for MR / HR, 0-20 by 1 mR, where mR stands for millirem, a dose of gamma or x-ray radiation. The dial below is adjusted for MR/HR with positions at 0.2, 2, 20, and OFF. Three sockets beneath the dial are marked "OUT," "CAL," and "G=M." The latter has a cable attached to the sampling tube, which is made of aluminum and hangs on the side of the box.
There is an aluminum handle on the top of the box. The power cord has two prongs.

Historical AttributesThis shop-built Geiger counter was used at the Harvard Cyclotron Laboratory from many years to measure does of radiation. In later years, items that had been in the beam line (such as the brass patient apertures) were sources of concern. Their radioactivity was monitored.
