DescriptionCyclotron computer rack consists of three wooden shelves held between two vertical metal poles rising from either side of the square metal base platform (that acts as a fourth shelf). A metal crossbar connects the two poles at the top. There are various holes drilled into the two poles such that the placement of the shelves can be adjusted. Each shelf is held in place on the rack by a black metal plate with two screws on each side. Along the back of the right-hand pole are 15 power outlets, each covered with a square, black plastic plate. There is a black ON/OFF switch at the bottom.
A computer monitor (2003-1-0293b) sits on the top shelf. A temperature monitor (2003-1-0293c) is fixed in between the two poles just underneath the top shelf. A pulse timer (2003-1-0293d) is screwed to the left pole just underneath the temperature monitor. The main systems unit of a computer, a keyboard, and a box of floppy discs (2003-1-0923e) sits on the second shelf from the top. A dot-matrix printer (2003-1-0293f) sits on the third shelf from the top. A box of printer paper (2003-1-0293i) fed into the printer above, and two cyclotron lead bricks (2003-1-0293g, h) sit on the metal base platform of the rack.
Various coils of cords and wires in black and grey insulation, emerging from the backs of the various devices, are bundled behind the rack. The base platform is raised slightly on four black wheels.
A white sheet of paper with various commands hand-written in black ink is attached to the crossbeam at the top of the rack with a round black magnet.

FunctionTo support, store, power, and organize various components of a Harvard Cyclotron laboratory monitoring and command station.
The computer rack was used in service of the second Harvard University cyclotron. The first Harvard cyclotron, built in 1937, was disassembled and moved to Los Alamos in 1943. Richard Wilson, who worked on the Harvard cyclotrons for 47 years and documented a history of the laboratory, divides the life of the second Harvard cyclotron into three periods. The initial phase was composed of design and initial construction efforts, reaching operation at 90 MeV. During the second phase, from 1955 until 1967, the cyclotron energy was raised to 165 MeV. The third and final phase of the cyclotron, from 1967 until 2002, was largely devoted to medical treatment and research.
