          Material
DescriptionThis is a mineral molecular model of topaz (Al2 (SiO4) (F,OH)2), consisting of white, black, red, yellow, and blue plastic spheres connected with brass rods. The colors of the spheres correspond to the following elements:

            White: O (Oxygen)

            Black: Si (Silicon)

            Red: Al (Aluminum)

            Yellow: Fl (Fluorine)

            Blue: Oh (Hydroxyl)

The model is on a varnished plywood base with a label affixed to it with brass tacks.

Historical AttributesThis molecular model is part of a group in the Collection that were made by Harvard students for courses in geology and mineralogy between the early 1950s and the early 1970s. Some of the molecules were simple class assignments, whereas others are more complex and refer to recent publications. They remained in the Geology Department for display and instruction.
