        DescriptionRectangular fruitwood rule with nearly square cross-section and four moveable slides (one on each face). Each slide is printed with two scales; the fixed portions of the rule above and below each moveable slide are each printed with one scale. Two small metal nails are visible at one end of each slide.

        On the first side of the slide rule, the bottom edge of the top, fixed portion of the rule is printed with an unlabeled logarithmic scale carrying values from 1 to 3.2. Two points along this scale are marked with dots and labeled. Near the 1.7 mark is "W G"; near the 1.9 mark is "A G". Printed along the top and bottom edges of the moveable slide is a logarithmic "C" scale, with values ascending from 1 to 10. Along the top edge of the bottom, fixed portion of the rule is a logarithmic scale "D" carrying values from 3.2 to 10.

        The second side of the slide rule is as follows: Printed along the bottom edge of the top, fixed portion of the rule is a scale for "Seg^t + L^y". This has values ranging from 0.3 to 4. Along both the top and bottom edges of the moveable slide is a logarithmic "C" scale, with values ranging from 1 to 9. Printed along the top edge of the bottom, fixed portion of the rule is a logarithmic scale "S+L" carrying values from 4 to 100.

        Printed along the bottom edge of the top portion of the rule's third side is a logarithmic "A" scale, with values ranging from 1 to 10. Two points along this scale are marked with dots and labeled. Near the 2.2 mark is "M B"; near the 2.8 mark is "A". A logarithmic scale "B", with values ranging from 1 to 10, is printed along both the top and bottom edges of the center, moveable slide. A point on the top scale near the 2.3 mark is labeled "W". Along the top edge of the bottom, fixed portion of the rule is an inverted logarithmic scale "M+D", with values descending from 2 to 1, then from 10 to 3.

        The top scale on the fourth side of the rule is "Seg^t + S^t", and is a logarithmic scale carrying values from 1 to 8. Printed along both top and bottom edges of the moveable slide is a logarithmic "B" scale with values ranging from 1 to 9. Printed along the top edge of the bottom, fixed portion of the rule is a logarithmic "S+S" scale, with values ascending from 8 to 100.

        The reverse side of each of the moveable slides is printed with information needed to calculate excise duties.

        Curatorial RemarksThe "B" slide is not finished to the same color as the rest of the slide rule; it may be a replacement for one lost or damaged. According to this website (http://www.sliderules.info/collection/specialised/9945-d&f.htm), the wine gauge (W G) and ale gauge (A G) marks disappeared from Everard rules after the introduction in 1824 of the imperial gallon.         FunctionThis is an example of an Everard slide rule, invented by Thomas Everard in the late-seventeenth century and used by excise officers to the gauge the duty on ale, wine, and spirits. The "segment lying" ("Seg^t L^y") scale was used if the cask was on its side; the "segment standing" scale ("Seg^t S^t") was used if the cask was upright. The reverse sides of each slide carry information needed for computing duty.

        The "B" slide is not finished to the same color as the rest of the slide rule; it may be a replacement for one lost or damaged.
