        DescriptionCylindrical brass drum, connected to several brass gears, mounted on a cast iron, rectangular base. To the side of the drum is a brass box on brass legs, holding a long screw. The box is connected to a brass gear which links with the gears connected to the drum. On the other end of the gears is a brass box, with several brass posts on top. To the left of the box is an electromagnetic coil.

        FunctionChronograph used to make precise time measurements, such as transits and other astronomical observations. A piece of paper specially cut is wrapped around the drum and secured with thumb screws. As the drum revolves slowly owing to the clock mechanism, a fountain pen is clamped against the paper to draw a fine line.
