DescriptionRectangular off-white paper sleeve printed in black, red, pink, and brown, and containing a paper slide.
Instructions for using the slide chart are printed on the left-hand side of its face. Also on the face of the chart are three rows of rectangular slots. The first row, labeled for "TEMPERATURE / CONVERSION," has a single slot through which the slide is visible. Printed above the slot is an arrow pointing down, labeled, "°FARENHEIT." Printed below the slot is an arrow pointing up, labeled, "°CELSIUS." Each arrow corresponds to a scale printed on the slide. The top scale carries values from -460 to 320; the bottom scale has values ranging from -273 to 160.
The second row of slots through the face of the chart is labeled for "LIQUID EQUIVALENTS (VOLUME)." The arrows above and below the leftmost slot are labeled for for "GALLONS" and "IMPERIAL GALLONS," respectively. Above the next slot to the right are two arrows, for "QUARTS" (left) and "PINTS (right); below is an arrow for "LITERS." Above the third slot from the left is an arrow labeled "OUNCES." Below the right-most slot is an arrow for "MILLILITERS·CUBIC CENTIMETERS." Visible through each slot is a scale carrying values from 1 to 100,000.
The bottom row of slots through the face of the chart is labeled for "WEIGHT EQUIVALENTS (MASS)." The arrows above and below the leftmost slot are labeled for "POUNDS" and "KILOGRAMS," respectively. The arrow above the second slot from the left is for "OUNCES." The arrow below the next slot to the right is labeled for "GRAMS." The arrows above and below the rightmost slot are for "TONS" and "METRIC TONS," respectively. Visible through each slot is a scale carrying values from 1 to 100,000.
Two scales are printed along the top and bottom edges of the back of the chart. The top scale, in inches, carries values from 0 to 8 1/2. The bottom scale, in centimeters, carries values from 0 to 22.
Also on the back of the chart are three rows of rectangular slots. The top row of slots is labeled for "LINEAR EQUIVALENTS (LENGTH)." Above the leftmost slot are two arrows, for "YARDS" (left) and "FEET" (right). Below the slot is an arrow for "METERS." Above the center slot is an arrow labeled for "INCHES." Below the center slot are two arrows, for "DECIMETERS" (left) and "CENTIMETERS" (right). The arrows above and below the rightmost slot are labeled for "MILES" and "KILOMETERS," respectively. Visible through each slot is a scale carrying values from 1 to 100,000.
The center row of slots is labeled for "SQUARE EQUIVALENTS (AREA)." Above and below the leftmost slot are arrows for "CUBIC YARDS" and "CUBIC METERS," respectively. Printed above the second slot from the left is an arrow labeled for "SQUARE FEET." The arrow above the center slot is labeled "SQUARE INCHES," while that below the fourth slot from the left is labeled "SQUARE CENTIMETERS." The arrows above the rightmost slot are labeled for "SQUARE MILES" AND "SQUARE KILOMETERS," respectively. Visible through each slot is a scale carrying values from 1 to 100,000.
The bottom row of slots on the back of the chart is labeled for "CUBIC EQUIVALENTS (VOLUME)." Above and below the leftmost slot are arrows labeled "CUBIC YARDS" and "CUBIC METERS," respectively. FunctionFor converting between U.S. and metric units.
The user first locates the row of slots (on either the front or the back of the slide) corresponding to the kind of measurement with which he is concerned. He then moves the slide to left or right such that the arrow labeled for his known units points to the appropriate value on the adjacent slide scale. Then, holding the slide in place, he locates within the same row the arrow labeled for the units into which he wishes to convert. The corresponding value on the adjacent slide scale indicates his measurement in the new units.
