        Material
DescriptionA model 6L6 beam power amplifier on which the identity of the elements inside has been marked. The arrangement inside is cyllindrical with a heated cathode at the center, followed by two wire screens (the "grid" and "screen") and then a metallic plate. There are some additional plates inside the configuration ("deflection plates").

FunctionThis was a working beam power amplifier on which all its have been marked for didactical purposes. All of the elements except for the deflection plates would be found in any tetrode or pentode.

Like in a standard triode in this tube electrons are produced by the heated cathode and accelerated towards the anode (plate) maintaining an electric current. This current can be controlled by placing a metallic grid between them and varying its voltage. One can amplify a weak signal connecting the grid to the signal. A tetrode improves this design by having an additional grid ("screen") between the grid and the anode, and solves a distortion by the so-called Miller effect that increases the effective capacitance of the system and thus alters its high-frequency performance.

A beam power tetrode would have the same elements as a standard tetrode, but in addition to these there would be additional plates in the configuration at the same potential as the cathode in order to direct the electron beam towards the anode, making more efficient use of the produced electrons. They could handle larger loads that a standard amplifier of a similar size.
