FunctionIf this is the lid of a Leyden jar, the brass rod would be connected by a cable or a chain to metal sheet covering inside the Leyden jar, which would also have a metal sheet coating the outside. The rod would act as the jar's electrode, and when connected to a voltage source would allow the jar to accumulate electric charge.
