BiographyJohn Cuff was an optical instrument maker first and foremost although he also sold barometers, thermometers, and hygrometers, and some surveying instruments. He is best known for his invention of a very popular form of compound microscope in 1743, which he announced in a brochure in 1744. His patron was Henry Baker, FRS (1698-1774).
