DescriptionThis spectrometer is mounted on a stand supported by three leveling screws. In the center is a platform on which was put a prism (or sometimes a diffraction grating). The platform rotates. The instrument has two arms. One is fixed and supports a telescope equipped with an adjustable slit (through which light to be analyzed would come in). The telescope mounted on that arm can be slightly moved sideways with the help of a micrometric screw.

The other arm also supports a telescope, this one though has a missing eyepiece with which one would have observed the spectrum formed by the prism or grating. This telescope can rotates, and its position is measured on the divided circle and vernier. Both telescopes have thumb screws underneath to adjust their vertical tilt.

FunctionA spectrometer is used in studying the properties of substances by means of light spectra. This one was most likely a student's apparatus.
