DescriptionThis is a Culpeper-type compound microscope with scrolling legs above and below the stage. The optical assembly is all brass. The base is mahogany and has a pull drawer filled with accessories. Concave mirror mounted on base.

          It has a pyramidal case.

The instrument is unsigned, but originally came with an instruction booklet, "Description of the Double Reflecting Microscope as made and sold by Charles Lincoln." There was a foldout plate in the booklet marked, "Made and Sold By Charles Lincoln at Sr. Isaac Newton's Head, Cornhill." The plate is now glued to cardstock. There also is a piece of paper on which is written in brown ink a list of objects on each of the ivory slides. These three items are currently in the instrument file.

Curatorial RemarksInstruction booklet, foldout plate (glued to cardstock), and manuscript list of slide specimens (glued to cardstock) are in the object record file of 1047. A similar microscope also by Charles Lincoln was originally part of the Collection, but was deaccessioned after CHSI received 1047. That instrument lacked a case and was missing various parts. It had originally been purchased by Philip Hofer in England. He gave or sold it to David P. Wheatland in December 1955. It's old inventory card is attached to the file of 1047, and Collection users must be careful not to confuse its information with that of 1047.
