DescriptionA small black box, horizontal, with a beige console. On each side of the box are two rows of five horizontal vents (four on the back). On the top are two circular grates.
The beige console has black lines running across it. In the top right corner is the instrument name, the company's logo, and the company's signature. Underneath that is a ribbed black knob over the words "ACTIVITY ____" written in black lettering. Beneath the knob is a metal on-off toggle switch, bearing the labels: "POWER / ON / OFF".
The top left corner of the console has a black dial with marks ranging from "0" at the top to "25" in the northwest position. The user has written on the dial itself (as opposed to the scale behind it) ".MARK.TIME". Near the bottom of the left side of the console is a protruding orange light that presumably illuminates when the device is on.
In addition to the black power cord that emerges from the back of the device, there are two other features: a fuse (with the word "FUSE" on it over an arrow pointing counter-clockwise), and a round socket that connects to the plug emerging from the transducerized tank (see 1996-1-0446).
On the back one also finds the maker's information about the device. (See Inscriptions section.)

FunctionThis object is a component of an ultrasonic system designed to clean delicate mechanical, optical, electrical, medical or horological parts.
The ultrasonic generator depicted here was meant to connect to any of the three models of transducerized tank (see 1996-1-0446) offered by the Narda Ultrasonics Corporation in order to complete the "ultrasonic cleaning unit." Alternately, immersible transducers that could connect to the generator were also available, and could render any tank into a component of the ultrasonic cleaning system.
To use the system, one must first fill the tank with a suitable ultrasound-conducting fluid (an aqueous or organic solvent, depending on the application). Next, the object to be cleaned must be submerged in the tank. After the settings on the generator are chosen, and the switch turned on, the transducer would convert the electrical energy from the generator into ultra-sonic waves in the tank (usually from 15-400 kHz). This process of blasting waves into a fluid is called cavitation, which may be thought of as "cold boiling." During this process, zillions of microscopic bubbles are created in the liquid, only to then collapse, producing shock waves that break up and lift off contaminants on the object.
