Material
DescriptionA long thin metal pole feeds into another pole with a slightly wider diameter. Connected about 15 or so centimeters from the end of the wider pole are two long thin triangular metal sheets. Rings are fixed at similar intervals over the rest of the length of the pole. From each ring emerges two thin rods (opposite one another, perpedindicular to the wider rod), each of which connects to one of the sheets, holding it in a certain position.

FunctionThis anemometer is part of a system to measure wind speed. The two sheets of metal would be twirled by a forceful gust of wind, in turn twirling the rod between them. The rotation speed is equal to that of the wind. The rod would be connected to an instrument able to quantify that speed.
ProvenanceFrom the Blue Hill Meteorological Observatory.
