Bibliography
DescriptionThe Bausch & Lomb 1939 catalogue identifies this apparatus as a "Federoff Universal Stage" to hold crystals. The stage has 5 axes of rotation. Three of these are divided into degrees, and two have verniers.
Included are two pairs of glass hemispheres with index of refraction, Nd. 1.516 and 1.649, a glass stage, and two screws for clamping the the device to the regular microscope stage. A small screwdriver is also in the box.
A fitted wooden box for storage accompanies this instrument. The latch hook is very art nouveau in style and made of nickel.

This instrument is a dated by original letter.
FunctionE. v. Fedorow pioneered methods for a universal stage in 1893. The instrument is used in petrographic studies for making index-of-refraction determinations of small crystal grains. The stage holds a crystal and rotates it on mutually perpendicular and horizontal axes after the crystal has been oriented with one of the axes.
