Material
DescriptionThis is a set of microscope objectives stored in two separate cases from the Hartnack firm. The exterior of the cases is covered in green faux leather. The interior is lined in cushioned purple silk fabric with a moire pattern. That in the larger box is faded.
Each box is fitted with a wooden tray with openings to hold the objectives. Black velvet cushions the bottom of the openings in the larger box; purple velvet, the smaller box.
Openings in the large box are numbered: 2, 4, 5, 8, 10.
Openings in the small box are numbered: 5, 7, 9, 10. It also has three smaller openings that are unnumbered.
The 4 objectives included are two ascribed to Hartnack, marked 1 and 4. Two other objectives are not marked and are by different contemporary makers. One has a sticker on which David P. Wheatland has written "Chevalier."
At present the 4 are stored in the larger box.

Curatorial RemarksThese two boxes were originally associated with microcope 1095. A note by Frederic T. Lewis states, "95 / Hartnack objectives / (fragments) which / do not belong / with 142," a reference to a Hartnack microscope no. 1142. The "95" was later crossed out.
