DescriptionThis is a Hartnack & Cie. Model VIII compound microscope. It has a heavy horseshoe-shaped base, a straight arm with a circular post, and a monocular body with a sliding eyepiece tube for the coarse adjustment. The fine focus is by a screw located at the top of the arm.
There is a square stage with a blackened top. The stage does not rotate. A sliding cup for interchangeable disk diaphragms is located beneath the stage. There is also a substage mirror on an adjustable arm.
This microscope is accompanied by a fitted mahogany case with a brass handle. The inside of the case is lined in purple. There is a framed folder in the case with a visiting card (see historical attributions) and a price list.
