DescriptionA black rectangular box with rounded edges. Near the bottom, protruding corners with circular holes in them. On one side, a rectangular yellow stamp with a circuit diagram of the entire device, featuring a ring with coils around it in the middle. The top of the box has a slotted screw on each end. There are eight metal connectors -- four along each long side -- that have been soldered over many times. These connectors are numbered (1 to 8); connectors 3, 4, 7, and 8 are also labeled "HIGH".

FunctionA transformer makes use of inductively coupled conductors -- the transformer's coils or "windings" -- to change voltages. AC power running through the primary coil can be "stepped up" or "stepped down" depending on the ratio of number of windings in the two coils.
