DescriptionThis is a small solar compound microscope designed by the London instrument maker William Gough. The instrument is constructed of brass and comprises a square mounting plate with an adjustable mirror on one side and a microscope tube on the other. The body tube has a Wilson style screw-barrel for a projection lens, but the lens is missing. The mirror can be rotated by means of two knobs.

The instrument is stored in a mahogany case with a brass handle on top.

Signedon plate: Gough No. 23 Middle Row / Holborn, London
Curatorial RemarksA note by David P. Wheatland in file card indicates that this microscope was last located at Warren Museum. However, it is not on Warren list (as of 7/22/98). Inventory card says "at Anatomy." The microscope case has a tag that indicates that it is not part of the collection.
FunctionThe solar microscope was intended to be fixed to a window shutter with the mirror outside and the tube extending into the room. The sunlight reflected from the mirror would then pass through the condensing and projection lenses, and the image would be projected into the room.
