DescriptionThis instrument is made of 8-inch focus lenses, giving a spectrum from 200uu to 800uu of about 65mm long. The dispersing system consists of one Cornu prism. The slit is an Adam Hilger No. 1. It has a fine screw adjustment, a divided drumhead, a wedge for reducing aperture and screws for correcting want of parallelism of the jaws. One tube goes from the slit to the prism housing, and one larger tube goes from the prism to the photographic housing. The size of the photographic plate is 4¼ X 3¼ inches. The spectrograph sits on a heavy cast iron tripod.

FunctionA spectrograph is an instrument used to obtain and record a light spectrum. The spectrograph splits the light from an object into its component wavelengths so that it can be analysed. In the present case, the spectral lines of a chemical element, for instance, is produced and photographed by the spectrograph. When the photographic plate is developed, the spectral lines are precisely measured to determine the composition of the said chemical element.
