Description"Student's Microscope" with peculiar front insert to the tube. This appears to be some fine focus mechanism, but the tube does not have the usual lever to move it.
The fine focus screw is on the stage as in CHSI nos. 1130 and 1131.
With the "Tolles Amplifier," an extension tube with a single lens " to double the power of any specified objective and eyepiece without disturbing the 'corrections.'"

Historical AttributesThis form was called the "Student's Microscope" in the Boston Optical Works / Charles Stodder Catalogues 1871 and 1873 (copies of which are in the CHSI file for 1045). Price $12. Other CHSI examples include nos. 1129, 1130, 1131, 1286, 1294, 1338.
According to Dr. Lewis, this microscope was as owned by Richard Cranch Greenleaf , second Vice President of the Boston Sciety of Natural History, 1871-1874. Greenleaf's liberality enabled Robert Bruce Tolles to relocate to Boston to set up his optical business.
The microscope was a a gift from Dr. C. A. Cheever. to the Ernst-Lewis Collection.
