Curatorial RemarksAppraisal by Brieux, 9/24/84: $8000. Zinner p. 568 lists "F.V." (without the "I") as a maker of horizontal dials of "Solnhofer Kalk" which apparently is a form of limestone chalk, perhaps like a fine ,soft cement.
FunctionTime finding at a fixed latitude after orienting the gnomon to point toward true North.
ProvenanceSir John Ritchie Findlay until his death, 1930. David Wheatland purchased from Sotheby's, London, December 4, 1961 (lot 115) through Ernst Weil. Donated to CHSI 1985.
