DescriptionThis is a Tolles intermediate compound microscope with rack and pinion coarse focus and lever fine focus. Diaphragm wheel, but no condensor. All red brass, with bright finish on stand and base. Rotating round nickel-plated stage. Tube also nickel-plated. Some components of the stage appear to be of thin spring steel and thus cannot be of German silver, yet have the same finish.
Substage assembly includes a rotating wheel with diaphragm stops.

Historical AttributesAccording to Dr. Lewis, this instrument was presented to the Collection by Dr. C. A. Cheever, who got it from the Boston Society of Natural History. Gordon Saltonstall, born in Salem on August 15, 1856, went to Harvard, collected and observed for the Society in Nassau and died at Pau, France, in his 22nd year. See file for more.
